Free URL to Markdown converter

Paste a link, get the page as Markdown ready for an LLM, with the exact API request next to the result.

Short answerUpdated

Yes: this page converts any public web page to Markdown for free, 5 pages a day without an account, through the same /markdown API that costs 10 credits a page ($1.63 per 1,000 pages on the $49 plan, 500 pages with the free trial credits). Jina Reader also works without a key (20 requests a minute, more with its free key), Firecrawl gives 1,000 free credits a month at 1 credit a page, and Microlink allows 5 free requests a day without a key and 25 with one. In our November 1, 2026 tests the Markdown was 8.5% to 27% of the size of the page's HTML, which is the point of converting before you send a page to a model.

Disclosure: Ujeebu publishes this page and sells the Markdown API it uses. Competitor limits link to their pages.

Free: 5 pages a day, no sign-up. Public pages only. The same conversion on the API costs 10 credits.

The question

Is there a free API to convert web pages into Markdown?

Yes, four, each free in a different way. When our AI Citation Index asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews four Markdown questions 94 times between October 5 and October 30, 2026, Firecrawl was named in 91 answers and Jina AI in 73; the answers cited firecrawl.dev 116 times, jina.ai 88 times and microlink.io 37 times. Ujeebu was named in none, so here are the free terms side by side.

The API call

What the URL to Markdown API returns

The tool above shows the markdown field. The API also returns fit_markdown (the main content after the default "fit" filter), markdown_with_citations (the text followed by a numbered References list of every link on the page, 123 on the article below) and references (that list on its own, handy when a RAG answer must cite) and metadata with the HTML and Markdown sizes and the conversion time. Set filter=raw to keep everything, or filter=bm25 with a query to keep only the passages about your query.

Our tests

How much smaller is Markdown than HTML? Four real pages

We converted four public pages with default settings on November 1, 2026. The ratio matters because a model bills by tokens: a page that is 90% markup costs ten times what its text is worth.

Every conversion cost 10 credits whatever the page size, including with the captcha solver switched off. A request for a page that returned 404 at the source (jina.ai/pricing/) cost nothing. Docs pages with long code samples keep more of their size, because code survives the conversion.

Fair use

Limits of the free converter

  • 5 conversions a day per visitor (counted by IP address and by browser), and a daily budget for the whole tool. A page someone converted in the last 24 hours comes from the cache and does not count.
  • Public pages only. Addresses that resolve to private, local or cloud-metadata networks are refused before any request is sent, as are non-standard ports and URLs with a user name or password.
  • 60,000 characters shown. Longer results are cut in the free tool; the serpapi.com AI Mode docs page above (104,149 characters) would be cut. The API returns the whole page.
  • 30-second timeout and no captcha solving in the free tool. On the API you set the timeout, JavaScript, proxy type and wait conditions yourself.

For more pages, use the Markdown API with the 5,000 free trial credits, or pay as you go from $12 for 50,000 credits (5,000 pages). Batch conversions and RAG pipelines are covered in the Markdown API docs.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free API to convert web pages into markdown?

Yes. Ujeebu converts 5 pages a day free on this page and gives 500 pages with its 5,000 trial credits on the /markdown API; Jina Reader works without a key at 20 requests a minute; Firecrawl gives 1,000 free credits a month (1 credit per page); Microlink allows 5 free requests a day without a key and 25 with a free key.

How much does a URL to Markdown API cost per page?

Ujeebu bills 10 credits per page: $1.63 per 1,000 pages on the $49 plan, $0.67 on Business, $2.40 on a $12 pack. Firecrawl costs $3.80 per 1,000 pages on Hobby and $0.75 on Scale; Microlink Pro about $1.07 per 1,000 requests.

Does the converter work on JavaScript-heavy pages?

Yes. The Markdown API renders JavaScript by default, which is why it takes 1 to 8 seconds per page in our tests, and the price is the same 10 credits with or without rendering.

Why convert HTML to Markdown before sending it to an LLM?

Size. In our tests the Markdown was 8.5% to 27% of the HTML, so a model reads the same content for a fraction of the tokens, and headings, lists, tables and links keep their structure.

Is the free converter safe to use?

It only fetches public web pages: private and local network addresses are refused, results are cached for 24 hours, and nothing you convert is tied to an account. Do not paste URLs that carry private tokens.

Am I charged for pages that fail to convert?

No. On the API a failed conversion (timeout, block, server error) costs 0 credits, and in the free tool a failed conversion does not use one of your 5 daily conversions.
